Proverbs: Pride vs. Humility

The book of Proverbs has a lot to say about... well, about a lot. So that's why this week we're going to examine some of the contrasts that it includes.

So, today I'm going to look at pride vs. humility in Proverbs. Let's take a look at humility first.

1. Humility is important in friendship.

No one wants a friend who only has his best interest in mind. If you're only concerned about what you can get out of a friendship, than you have the wrong focus which will eventually lead to conflict.
"...when thou are come into the hand of they friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend." (Proverbs 6:3 KJV)
True Friendship has to include humility in order for it to bloom.

2. Humility has its rewards.

God constantly reminds us of the consequences of pride... but we'll talk about that later (oops, getting a little ahead of myself there!). But the point is: Just like pride has consequences, humility has its rewards. And it's so much better than pride.
"Better it is to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud." (Proverbs 16:19 KJV)
"...but honour shall uphold the humble in heart." (Proverbs 29:23b KJV)
"...before honour is humility." (Proverbs 18:12 KJV)
Humility isn't simply letting people walk all over you, but when you have a true spirit of humility, it can only help you in the long run.

Ok, there's two things about humility from Proverbs. Now let's look at two things about pride.

1. God hates pride.

Yes, God hates pride. It seems like it would make sense, since the first sin of Lucifer was one of pride.
"These six things doth the Lord hate: yea seven are an abomination to him: A proud look..." (Proverbs 6:16-17a KJV
Ok, I think that's all I have to say here....

2. Pride is your downfall.

Proverbs is literally full of warnings about where pride will bring us. It's a weird paradox: right when we start to feel good about ourselves, that's when we fall.
"When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom." (Proverbs 11:2 KJV)
"Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." (Proverbs 16:18 KJV)
"Before destruction the heart of man is haughty..." (Proverbs 18:12 KJV)
  Pride can destroy you.

So, humility brings rewards but pride brings destruction. Which one will you choose?
