The Armour of God

Monday, November 28, 2016

This world we live in is not what we're fighting against. We're called to fight against spiritual darkness. But we can't use our physical weapons to fight against things that are spiritual! So what kind of weapons do we need to use?

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. ~ Ephesians 6:12 KJV
I think it's pretty cool that God has equipped us with the spiritual weapons we need in His Word. Ephesians 6 is the famous armour of God chapter where Paul uses armour imagery to get the readers to realize that we're in a battle.

The analogy Paul uses is quite brilliant. I mean if you were going to battle, you wouldn't just go with your normal jeans and a t-shirt on. You'd put some armour on and probably grab a weapon of some sort.

You can't just walk into a battle unprepared or you'll lose.

Everyday we walk into battles. Battles with our flesh and battles with the world. And if you're living for Christ you should be fighting battles. But don't walk into those battles unprepared.

Be ready to deflect the enemies' arrows with your shield, to protect yourself with your armour, and to strike back with your sword.

What kind of spiritual weapons do we use? I'm glad you asked.

Here's some of the armour that I find in Ephesians 6.

#1. Truth (v.14)

Now this isn't really a piece of armour but it's interesting to note that we are to give the truth. The truth is the one thing that can identify the enemies' lies and set people free.
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. ~ John 8:32 KJV

#2. Breastplate of Righteousness (v.14)

When we are born again into God's family, Jesus imputes His righteousness to us; making us righteous. A breastplate covers your chest which holds your heart. And hopefully your heart has been washed by the blood of Jesus to make it white as snow.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness. ~ Romans 10:10 KJV

#3. Gospel of Peace (v.15)

We should always be ready to give the good news to someone who hasn't accepted it. God will use that seed in ways that we might not even know about in the future. And I like how he includes the feet in this. In other words: Get out there! Don't wait for someone to come to you!
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. ~ Isaiah 55:11

#4. Shield of Faith (v.16)

God is very pleased when we choose to place our faith and trust in Him. That faith can help shield us from the wickedness around us.
...As it is written, The just shall live by faith. ~ Romans 1:17 KJV

#5. Helmet of Salvation (v.17)

A helmet is something that protects your head which is arguably one of the more targeted areas on the body. And I think that's where Satan wages a lot of his wars - on our minds. But if we can have that helmet - salvation - we are much less prone to those attacks.
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men. ~ Titus 2:11 KJV

#6. Sword of the Spirit (v.17)

The Bible is probably the most important weapon in spiritual warfare. Even Jesus, when He was tempted, used it! And there's nothing like the words of God to make the enemy stagger backwards.
So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word. ~ Psalm 119:42  KJV

#7. Prayer (v.18)

Most people miss this important aspect of warfare. And most don't even include it in the list of the armour of God. But it's another mighty weapon that most don't know the power of.
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. ~  Romans 8:26  KJV
So are you ready to jump into the battle now?
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. ~ 1 Corinthians 15:57 KJV
