Fruit of the Spirit: Patience

"If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." (Galatians 5:25 KJV)
I haven't done a fruit of the Spirit post in a while and I've been thinking about this subject a lot lately, so today we're doing patience.

In the King James Bible it's called longsuffering. That word pretty much defines itself.

Sometimes we equate waiting with patience. But I think patience is a lot more than that.

I look at patience as the way we do some things. For example, we may wait for the next person in the checkout line as he fumbles with payment, but how are we waiting? Are we anxious, irritated, or angry? Because that's not patience.

See, we waited (because we had no choice probably) but we didn't practice patience.

Being patient is almost always associated with other godly characteristics. It requires grace, generosity, and love.

In fact, when patience is mentioned in the Bible, it is almost always mentioned with other traits we should strive for.

Because patience isn't just the act of waiting - it's the way we wait. That's why patience goes hand-in-hand with other fruit of the Spirit.

Going back to the previous example, how would we wait patiently? We would probably be more gracious to the people around us, not get angry at the person, and not be anxious about getting home a little later than we expected.

How do we get patience? The Bible says that patience is gotten by tribulation:
"And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope." Romans 5:3-4 KJV
Think of it like this: what if you were the person holding up the check-out line? Wouldn't you be more patient with someone else if you've gone through the exact same thing?

Lastly, look at that verse and the things that patience brings. It's end result is hope - isn't that what we all need?

So, let's all strive to be more patient - to our friends, to our family members, and to random strangers who cross our path.
"... and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness." ~1 Timothy 6:11 KJV

  1. Oh wooow yes. I'd never really thought into this very much, but this is SO TRUE. Patience isn't just being okay to wait. It's /graciously/ waiting and not just moping around going "Wheeeeen???" It seems so obvious now, and yet I'd never really...thought of it that way before?
This was a very good thought prompting post, today. :D

    1. Yay! I'm so happy you liked this post and it gave you a new perspective. I've been thinking through the same things recently (hence the post lol). Thanks for your comment; they always make me happy :)
