Seasons in Life: Winter

Monday, December 11, 2017

Winter has always been one of my least favorite seasons. It's so cold and dismal and dark. It doesn't seem like summer will ever come again or that we'll ever be able to go outside without a coat on.

Sometimes, life has seasons like that. There are times where your heart gets cold and everything around you seems bleak. This is what I call a winter season.

I think God gave us seasons to remind us that, even though some seasons aren't as pleasant, they are all necessary for growth and all have beauty in them.

Everyone experiences winter seasons in his life, and it's easy during these seasons to grow anxious, disappointed, hopeless, or fearful.

But winter seasons aren't always bad - it's just that we humans sometimes have a tainted view of life; if we're not happy then something must be wrong. But sometimes we go through hard seasons... not because of something we've done, but because it's part of God's will for our lives.

So, if you're going through a winter season, here's some encouragement for you.

Oftentimes the biggest times of growth in life are when we are going through a hard time. Why's that? Because sometimes God has to teach us some lessons the hard way. We may never have given up gossip (or even realized we had that problem) unless we end up losing a close friend because of it.
God uses hard times to try and bring us closer to who He made us to be. We can either be flexible in His hands or we can be hard and brittle.
"But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand." ~Isaiah 64:8 KJV
Even in some of the hardest times of life, there's always beauty to be found. Despite the cold snow and biting wind of an ice storm, afterward it can be quite beautiful to see the world blanketed in snow. When we're in the midst of winter we often only focus on the bad things that go on. It's hard to "take the blinders off" sometimes and actually look around at the little things that make life beautiful.
"He hath made every thing beautiful in his time..." ~Ecclesiastes 3:11a KJV
"To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes..." ~Isaiah 61:3a KJV
As long as winter seasons sometimes seem, they do eventually end. When we're going through these times, it's easy to believe the lie that it will always be this hard, that we'll always be dealing with that situation, or that we'll never be able to go back to "normal" life. Sometimes we've just got to keep looking for the light at the end of the tunnel and not give up hope.
"Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord." ~Psalms 31:24 KJV
God didn't promise us an easy life. But He did promise that He would never leave us or forsake us while we live this life.
"And he changeth the times and the seasons..." ~ Daniel 2:21a KJV
