Ecclesiastes 3: Get and Lose; Keep and Cast Away

"A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away." Ecclesiastes 3:6 KJV
This verse reminds me of the story of Job in the Bible. There was a time in Job's life where the Lord blessed him and gave him much wealth. And then there was a time where the Lord took all of that away.

That's something to remember: God is the One Who gives and takes away.

But the next part of the verse talks about keeping and casting away. It seems like that part is something we can choose to do. We can choose to hold on to something or to let it go.

God made us with a free will. He allows us to choose our actions and decisions. We are not robots.

So there's two parts to this verse. The first part is showing the sovereignty of God in that He ultimately gives and takes away. The second part is showing our free will; we have the ability to keep things or to cast them away.

The tricky part comes when we try to keep the things that the Lord is taking away. A good example of this would be if the Lord took away a friendship. If He removed that person out of your life but you kept trying to go back and remember all the good times you had with that person, it would kind of be like you were trying to keep that thing that the Lord was taking away.

The friendship is gone. But you're making it harder on yourself by trying to relive the past. You don't want to move on. You don't want to let go.

And that's probably one of the biggest struggles we will have. Trying to keep the things the Lord has removed out of our lives.

The best response we can have when God takes something from us is Job's response:
"Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return hither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord." ~ Job 1:21 KJV
Are you holding on to things in your life that God wants you to let go of?
