The Power of the Tongue // Words and How We Use Them

Monday, May 14, 2018

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue." ~Proverbs 18:21a KJV
Words are amazing things. They allow us to communicate with each other using syllables and letters and sounds. God gave humans the gift of languages so that we could communicate with each other effectively.
Proverbs talks about how death and life are in the tongue's power (ch.18 v.21) so I think it's something worth studying! How can something so small as a word give death or life?

As with many things in life, we can use our words for good or for evil. For help or for hurt. For building up or for tearing down. For life or for death. That's why there's so many warnings in Scripture about how we use our words - because it's a big deal.

We may think of just a word not being able to have that much power. I mean, we say something and the next minute forget what we just said! But just because something is little, doesn't mean it can't wield great power:
"Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!" ~James 3:5 KJV
The words that we say show who we are as people. Because words are just an outpouring of what's in our hearts.
"...for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh." ~Matthew 12:34b KJV
Are we always gossiping about other people? Are we constantly telling people exactly what we think? Are we blunt in a way that is offensive or hurtful? That is because those are the things that are in our hearts.

But what if we replace those things with uplifting words, with gentleness, with kindness? If we nurture these qualities in ourselves then that is what will come out! Every word that we speak should be spoken in love and in truth.

The words we say show what's in our hearts.

What do the words we say say about us as a person?
Obviously, there will be times when we will be tempted to say something that is unkind or with the wrong spirit. With the advent of social media, it's so easy to spew any thoughts you may have online for all to see. There are many people who let their tongue control them instead of controlling their tongue!

So, here's my piece of advice to you: think before you talk. Don't just spew stuff out.

Think: Is it true?
Is it helpful?
Is it inspiring?
Is it necessary?
Is it kind?

We can't take back any words that we've already said, so think before you say them!
"If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body." ~James 3: 2 KJV
Just how much do the words you say affect those around you?
"But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." ~Matthew 12:36-37 KJV
