Everyday we wake up we have a choice. Well we have many choices, really. But today we're going to look at one of the choices we make.

"...I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life..." Deuteronomy 30:19 kjv
As I was reading through Deuteronomy 30, the emphasis on choices struck me. It was either you choose life by obeying God and His commandments, or you choose death by following after false gods.

This passage is written to the children of Israel, and they were required to keep the commandments for their salvation, but part of this can apply practically to us today.

To start off, I think that none of us would want to choose death. I mean, it seems like a pretty obvious choice to choose life.

But there are so many in our generation who are choosing death; and I don't mean only mean the world, but also those who call themselves Christian.

So I'm going to go over three ways that we can choose life; everyday.
Verse 17 in Deuteronomy 30 starts off with:
"But if thine heart turn away..." (kjv)
That's where it starts, in your heart. You can't let fear or bitterness or anger turn your heart away from God and His Word.

Our hearts sometimes hold a lot inside of them, but we have to remember that "the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked" (Jeremiah 17:9 kjv). We think that we'll be all right if we let something else have just a little piece of our heart, but God desires our whole heart.

Remember, "where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." (Matthew 6:21 kjv)
Deuteronomy 30:17 continues with:
"... so thou wilt not hear...." (kjv)
If we've already decided in our hearts that we know what's best for us, then we won't feel the need to listen to others. We turn to others for godly advice, and if they try to give it, we'll just ignore it.

We make excuses like you don't know my situation or you don't understand which may or may not be true, but that shouldn't annul godly advice.

No one is above getting counsel from others, because "a wise man will hear, and will increase in learning; and a man of understand shall attain unto wise counsels." (Proverbs 1:5 kjv)
Verse 17 in Deuteronomy 30 ends with this:
"... but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them." (kjv)
The children of Israel were warned against turning to other gods. They were warned about making graven images, and about worshiping them.

Most of us probably don't have little statues of gods that we worship, but there are some things that have a part of our hearts that God should have. There are things in our lives that are more important to us than studying the Bible and prayer - and those things need to go.

Maybe you just need to take a break; from social media, from the television, from your laptop; maybe you just need to eliminate some distractions.

God doesn't want to share your heart with other things, "for the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God." (Deuteronomy 4:24 kjv)

These three things are like dominoes; once one falls then the other two are sure to follow.

In closing, I want to remind you, in Proverbs it says:
"There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." (Proverbs 14:12 kjv)
Are you choosing life today by your heart attitude?
Are you choosing life today by your willingness to listen?
Are you choosing life today by keeping God first?
"That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life." ~ Deuteronomy 30:20 kjv

  1. I really needed this today. Thank you. <3

    1. Sure thing Ivie! Glad I could encourage you <3

  2. hey I am struggling to break away from something that has been destroying myself. Since it has taken over my life and the devil tells me I need it, I guess it would qualify as a addiction? idk, just prayer would be nice. Thanks.

    1. I'll be praying for you Evan. Remember, everyday you have to chance to choose life over death! Let the Lord guide your decision and not the devil.
