Fruit of the Spirit: Faith

Monday, August 27, 2018

It's been a little while since we've had a fruit of the Spirit post, so here we are! Recently the Lord has really impressed His great faithfulness to me, so we're going to explore the topic of faith today.

"... as it is written, The just shall live by faith." ~ Romans 1:17b kjv
It seems as though faith is often overlooked as one of the fruits of the Spirit, but I think the reason is because in order to have that fruit, you've got to have your faith in Jesus.

Writing a post about faith is so much easier than actually practicing it in my own life. Because faith is a fairly simple thing to explain.

We've probably all heard the Hebrews definition of faith from the famous chapter on faith -
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1 kjv)
All of us have faith. Whether we think we do or not, we all believe in something that cannot be seen or proven conclusively.

As a born again Christian, I have faith that God set the world in motion and sent His only Son to take the penalty of our sin so that we could spend eternity with Him if we accept His free gift.

But today, I want to look at more than just the first faith of salvation. We can grow in faith as we mature as Christians - because the Bible talks about how we need to live by faith and not by sight.

It's so much easier to live by our senses; what we feel, what we see, what we can taste, touch, smell, and hear. But God calls us to something different. He tells us that we must live by faith - that means that we can't always see or feel what's ahead. We can't always know how something is going to turn out.

God places an emphasis on the things which can't be seen by the human eye:
"While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." (2 Corinthians 4:18 kjv)
When we see through eyes of faith, we get a much clearer picture of the world.
"(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)" (2 Corinthians 5:7 kjv)
