Lord, Build My House

There are times in life where the walls we've built around our lives come tumbling down, where the foundation we've laid cracks and falters, or where the storms come and destroy what we've built.

"Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain." ~ Psalms 127:1 kjv
It happens so often, and yet we never even ask why or what we're doing wrong. But I think the problem is that we're the ones building our lives - and not God; Who should be doing the building.

In fact, the verse says that we who put all this work into building our lives - around sports, around friends, around the social spotlight, even around church - it's all in vain if God isn't the builder.
First things first, we need to have a good foundation. When an architect builds a building he's got to make sure that the foundation will hold - so that the whole building doesn't collapse.

Jesus tells a story about this very thing in the gospel of Luke (6:48-49). He talks about two different men who each build their homes on different foundations. The house that was built on the foundation of sand immediately crumbled under the pressures of a storm. But the house that was built on the foundation of a rock was able to withstand the wind and the waves.

Of course, no sane architect would build a house on sand alone. If you've been to the beach, you know what happens when you build a sandcastle - eventually the waves come and wash it away.

The analogy here is that when you build your life around temporary things, they won't be able to stand when trials and testing come. But when you build your life around the only thing that is stable, you will be able to find strength and hope when trials appear.

And what is that only thing, you ask? Well, let's look at what the Bible says:
"For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ." ~ 1 Corinthians 3:11 kjv
Christ should be our foundation. He is our Rock Who will keep us from being "washed away" by the wind and the waves of life.

We can't keep building our lives around the shallow things that only crumble when trials come.

We've got to lay the foundation of Christ in our lives, and then let everything else fall into place.
"... the stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner..." ~ Mark 10:12 kjv
